Course
Description
For the Christian, there are two sacred texts: scripture and one’s own life. This course will explore the two texts through reading, theological reflection and
exegesis.
The scriptures embody many different spiritualities, each born in
particular historical and social circumstances. Students will choose
which of these spiritualities we will study. Our approach to these
texts will be first to read, then to examine the literary shape
and socio-historical circumstances (exegesis), and finally to reflect
on the scriptures with the aid of various styles of prayer and reflection.
The goals are for each student, including the professor, to gain
greater appreciation for the various spiritualities in scripture,
to deepen insight into the process of revelation and interpretation,
to develop greater skill in the critical study of scripture, and
to learn new methods for engaging scripture individually and in
communities of faith.
