The exegetical paper explores a biblical passage with a particular
critical method. Within these broad parameters, you are
free to select the biblical passage on which you would like to work
and the method you will use to study it. As students choose
topics, their names and e-mail addresses will be accessible from this
page so that you can contact those working on similar projects to
share resources and ideas (click on the word "Researchers"
below).
Use the
tabs above to access resources for the research, exegesis and writing
stages of your paper. These resources were written for
undergraduates, and some of what they say will therefore be "old
hat" for you.
Exegetical
Paper
The
exegetical research paper allows you to focus on both a
particular biblical passage and a particular critical method.
Certain passages lend themselves to certain methods, so
the choice of one will suggest the choice of the other. You
are therefore encouraged to run your initial ideas by the
professor for help in determing the appropriate method and/or
passage. The guides to the exegetical methods available
from the Exegesis tab above (the same link is on the left
of every course page as well) provide introductions and
steps for each method, as well as a bibliography of studies
examining each method and applying it to biblical passages. A
review of these pages will help you to decide which method,
if not which passage, may interest you. You may
also be interested in reviewing the Scripture Tools page
with its nested references to biblical manuscripts and versions
(see tab at the top of this research page).
