The Story of Jesus in Matthew

Black Lives MatterIn the last class, we saw that the Gospel of Mark was not particularly well-written. We saw how modern editions of the Bible "clean up" the bad grammar by deleting "ands" and "immediatelys," by putting all the narrator's verbs in the past tense, and also by rendering the idioms and time-markers into normal modern English equivalents. More interesting, perhaps, was the NAB's choice to change Mark's centurion's comment from "A son of God" to "THE Son of God," making it sound like this Roman soldier chose Jesus over his own Emperor as the real agent of God on earth).
This process of "cleaning up" Mark isn't unique to modern translators. It started as early as gospel #2. Matthew copies almost all of Mark's story, but adds a LOT (like the infancy story you'll read in chapters 1–2 and the sermon on the mount in chapters 5–7.

For today's reading, begin with Cariello's rendering of the first half of the gospel in The Action Bible, and then read Matthew 1–2 and 5–7 in the NRSV closely. Be able to answer the following questions:

  1. How does Cariello situate the story of Jesus in the Roman imperial context?

  2. As you review The Action Bible 526-44, what stories do you find there that are NOT in Matthew 1–2?

  3. Now focus on Matthew 1–2. Outline the structure of this infancy story. What are its six main parts? Are there any patterns you find in the outline?

  4. You are familiar from our chart in a prior class with seven different models of the messiah. Which one(s) do you find Matthew alluding to in chapters 1–2 and 5–7? Be able to offer "proofs" of verses or images that demonstrate the model.
