The Line of David/Jesse's Tree
Note: The Jesse tree is an idea based in the messianic promise to David that a descendant would always sit on his throne (2 Sam 7:12-16). It was elaborated by Isaiah the prophet around 740 BCE:
A shoot shall come out from the stump of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots. The spirit of the Lord shall rest on him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord. (11:1-2)
The Christian evangelists Matthew and Luke merge the Isaiah prophecy with their view that Jesus is the Davidic or royal messiah and create genealogies linking Jesus to David and Jesse his father (Matt 1:6-16; Luke 3:23-32). Thus for this topic's historical context, you will have to choose one of four historical contexts: Isaiah, the Deuteronomistic history (1 Samuel), Matthew or Luke.
