The Galilee Boat

The Galilee Boat
When a severe drought in 1986 lowered the level of the Sea of Galilee north of Tiberias and Magdala, it revealed the hull of a first-century CE fishing boat that had been remarkably well-preserved in the mud. Conservation efforts and scientific study allow visitors to see the hull today, complete with its cedar and oak strakes, frames, keel, tenons and pegs and its metal nails. Dubbed "the Jesus boat," it is typical of the fishing vessels of the first century in which several of Jesus' followers made their living a little further north in Capernaum (Peter, Andrew, James and John in Mark 1:16-20).
