Course
Description
This
first course in sacred scripture introduces the student to the Old
Testament or Hebrew Bible and to Catholic Church teaching about the
Old Testament. Special emphasis is given to the history of the communities
that wrote these texts and how that history explains the rich tapestry
of stories, laws, prayers, prophecies and proverbial wisdom one finds
in these 46 books. Each of the five weeks of the course will be devoted
to a particular section of scriptures: the first two weeks to the
Torah or Pentateuch, the third week to the Prophets, the fourth week
to the Wisdom material, and the fifth week to some exilic psalms and
historical and apocalyptic works from the Maccabean period. Students
can expect to gain some familiarity with the Catholic Study Bible
(NAB) as a resource for reflection and ministry.
How to Use this Website
This website complements the class. The tabs to the left provide materials
made available through the class, like the syllabus, handouts, outlines
of Church teaching, and directions for the final assigment, but there
are also other resources that may help you in your ministry (Scripture
Tools, Exegesis, Theological Reflection, Bibliography, Glossary).
You are welcome to use these materials as references in your ministry,
although I ask that if you reproduce them on paper for your parisioners
you indicate their authorship.
Several of these resources are pages designed for our undergraduate
and graduate students at Santa Clara University. Thus, some of the
pages have different navigation and a different look, but you should
always be able to return to these ILM pages by hitting the "back"
button on your browser. | |
