Tamir Elterman, "Spades Strike History in Galilee" (14 May 2014)
When the Legionaries of Christ began to excavate the foundations for a retreat center
in the Galilean village of Magdala, they accidentally uncovered
the actual first-century village just a foot under the surface, just as in 2009
a salvage dig by the Israel Antiquities Authority prior to the construction of a new hotel
unearthed the only first-century CE synagogue yet unearthed in the land of Israel.

  • Magdala Project - the official excavation site, hosted by the Studium Biblicum Franciscanum, Faculty of Biblical Sciences and Archaeology.

  • Israel Antiquities Authority: Migdal - a brief description of the fishing boat found in the mud of ancient Magdala, not far south of Capernaum.
