Literature, Interpretation and Spirituality

Introduction

The Bible encompasses many books of several different genres written over the course of a millennium.  What are these genres, how are they related to human discourse in the past, and what is entailed in our interpretation of them today?  This topic could include a literary overview of canonical and extra-canonical scriptures, an historical overview of the major events in Israel’s history and how these spawned scriptural texts, and a discussion of contemporary hermeneutics (how do we read? how do we interpret?).
